curiosity

Filed under: Arts & Humanities, Fashion/Style/Trends, general thoughts — admin @ 12:34 pm

When people got pregnant, many people let their fetus listen to some music, or they talk to the fetus. Pregnancy is totally new for me. I have many questions or a lot of curiosity about it. First I was thinking how the fetus can breathe in the uterus. The nurse told me that actually the fetus does not breathe in the uterus; they get everything from the umbilical cord. That is a huge thing. They even do not breathe when they are inside of the uterus, but once they come out, they have to do everything. I was thinking about if they can speak something or not when they are in the uterus.

Halloween Costumes

Halloween is coming. For every American kid, I think, this is the most exciting time for them. They grew up in such environment. Normally when you are at a foreign country, the best thing to do is that when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Otherwise you will feel you are incompatible and can not enjoy your life there.
So for me, Halloween is a time for me to get to know the country, the people and the culture here.
If you let me choose the best fit from Halloween Costumes, I would choose the Superhero Costumes.
There is some reason about that and I would give some advice on that.
Maybe 5 years ago, I knew nothing about America since I went to Japan after graduation and stayed until last year. Most of the movies I watched were Japanese shows. You know, the Japanese animations are even famous in the world. Also the Japanese electronic stuff is famous in the world too. So I had no reason and no chance to get to know about American culture. I did not change my mind until I watched Mr. Incredible. The pictures in that were so beautiful and I think the characters in the animation would get liked by every kid. You know, the Japanese animation always can grab the children’s hearts so closely and tightly in a peaceful way.
The advice I want to give is that if there are some props coming with the costumes that would be perfect because children like the character not just because of the characters’ costumes but all the things the characters used.

simultaneous interpretation

Filed under: Chinese, general thoughts — admin @ 7:45 am

For foreign languages students, showing on TV, standing near to the great person, doing simultaneous interpretation is their dream. Such case is much easier than for the middle important people. Normally you can predict what they will say and the same kind of sentences were repeated for thousands of times.
In the middle important people rank, the most difficult thing is to do simultaneous interpretation for Chinese. For example, the boss of some company and some professor, normally in their talk or speech, it is full of garbage, hardly you could find any actually useful information to interpret. They spit out one paragraph of “I love poo”, and think their part was done now, and then wait for you to interpret.

dragon and snake

Filed under: Chinese, general thoughts — admin @ 6:20 pm

I was born in China, the country that worships dragon. We were told that we were descendants of dragon. But we do not know what dragon really is. In TV, normally it was described as a mythical monster traditionally represented as a gigantic reptile having a lion’s claws, the tail of a serpent, wings, and a scaly skin. In the foreign dictionary, it is also taken as a fiercely vigilant or intractable person, or something very formidable or dangerous. From such feature, it is exactly like snake. Maybe it was just a thing that got beautified from snake.

onomatopoeia

Filed under: Chinese, English, Japanese, general thoughts — admin @ 8:38 pm

You know there are many onomatopoeia in Chinese and Japanese.

When I heard the sound from the outside of the car, I can say that is 叭哒叭哒 in Chinese, or バタバタ in Japanese. I did not know what kind of word to use in English. Honey answered click.

From the pronunciation, I could not imagine that connected the same sound.

Normally, we can get the close sound or noise from the pronunciation of onomatopoeia. But for English word click, I had to look at the meaning of it. It is a brief, sharp, nonresonant sound:

stammer

Filed under: general thoughts — admin @ 8:25 pm

You know stammer is a way of speaking characterized by involuntary pauses or repetitions. Do you think stammer is one kind of disease? Do you think there is some good way to redress such shortcoming? If you know anything, please tell me.

I do not have stammer. I am not so good at having official talk, specifically when I try to talk about reason, I always become emotive. so I am still very jealous about the people who have the gift of the gab. Also I dream about doing speech like politicians without feeling I am going to cry before I start the speech.

The house of Babel

Filed under: general thoughts — admin @ 8:02 pm

I am dreaming about what to put in the house of Babel.  First I thought I can put the following in it.

. Natural Languages

. Program languages

. Sign Languages, such as dactylology,

Under natural languages, I want to put some items that are mainly useful foreign languages learners, such as dictionary, translation, grammar, composition, Answering room for explaining the new words. I have some idea that the person who answered the question will be given score, and the score will help them to get paid. And learn and teach room. and Research room.

You know, currently, not so many languages sites are really useful for users.

could-not-see-ize?

Filed under: English, Japanese, general thoughts — admin @ 12:15 pm

There is a funny news in Japanese Yahoo. It is talking about that the threatens in the internet become non visualization.

You know that ~ize (~) can make a lot of new transitive verbs, and then from there you could make a lot of new nous with ~ization.

For example there are revolutionize, systemize, unionize

crystallize, hypothesize (~), if you want to push a phrase or a sentence into that place, people would laugh at you.

calvinize, bowdlerize

dramatize, oxidize, iodize

apostatize, sympathize.

Normally, when you make a new word, there are some rules to follow. Otherwise the words you made would be very funny and could not spread.

For example, ~ize, the front part should be one word. After you made the new word, you can add prefix or suffix.

grammatical and semantic

Filed under: general thoughts — admin @ 7:08 pm

Grammar is the study of describing how words and their component parts combine to form sentences. Sometime if you want to make a perfect sentence from the grammar you made, you would find that the meaning of the sentence is something both funny and annoying.

If you are trying to machine-translate some languages just according to the grammar rules, you are just doing garbage research.

The ideal way is to combine semantic information or semantic meaning with grammar rules.
